Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on the 16th that in the field of semiconductor development for the Internet of Things (IoT), the open source standard "RISC-V" that anyone can use is on the rise. The standard is first used continuously in areas such as wearable devices and smart home appliances, and forecasts show that by 2025, the adoption rate will reach 28%, industrial equipment will reach 12%, and automobiles will reach 10%. RISC-V is emerging as the main antagonist for UK-based ARM looking to foray into the Internet of Things, starting with smartphones.

RISC-V is one of the instruction set architectures (ISAs) that specify the basic specifications of semiconductors and was developed by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, since 2010. Since it's an open-source architecture, anyone can use it for designs for free. Some companies also sell the intellectual property (IP) of circuits designed based on the RISC-V architecture, such as the American SiFive established by researchers at the University of California and others.

In China, which is actively introducing RISC-V, wearable device manufacturers such as Huami Technology and electronic cigarette semiconductor manufacturers have always adopted this architecture. Alibaba Group has developed AI chips for the Internet of Things based on RISC-V, and has made its IP public to promote the introduction of global enterprises. Beijing Zhaoyi Innovation Technology is developing RISC-V microcontrollers and promoting products in the Japanese market.

In terms of American companies, the semiconductor giant Western Digital is very active in introducing RISC-V, and has proposed a policy of replacing the control semiconductors of storage devices with RISC-V products.

Large IT companies around the world are also actively adopting RISC-V. In October 2021, Google in the United States launched the new smartphone "Pixel 6" series, using RISC-V to develop semiconductors for data protection for this series. Apple has started recruiting "RISC-V programmers" on its job site.

More than 2,000 companies, universities and individuals have joined the industry group RISC-V International. In addition to Western Digital and Google, they also include Qualcomm in the United States, Samsung Electronics in South Korea, Huawei Technologies in China, and Siemens in Germany. Currently, technology development is underway. and standard setting.
